Get to know Bodegas Valdemar

In 1889, Joaquín Martínez Bujanda dug his first rock-hewn cellar in Oyón. Five generations later, Ana Martínez Bujanda and her brother Jesús run the family house, to which the Conde Valdemar brand belongs. According to the family, they cultivate over 300 hectares of their own vineyards across the three zones of Rioja.

Wine for everyone, quite literally

In 2018, Valdemar became the first winery in Spain to establish fully accessible wine tourism, open also to those with visual, hearing or cognitive impairments, with a specially trained team. The Chamber of Commerce of Álava recognised the house in 2023 as a socially responsible international company.

From Oyón to Washington

In 2019, the family opened the Valdemar Estates winery in Walla Walla, Washington State, the first non-American wine house ever established in this growing region. Jesús Martínez Bujanda was named in 2021 as the only Spaniard on Wine Enthusiast's «40 under 40» list.

The grape varieties of Rioja, including the forgotten ones

Alongside Tempranillo, the house cultivates varieties that disappeared elsewhere: Graciano, grown again since 1982, Maturana since 2001, Tempranillo Blanco since 2009. The Conde Valdemar Crianza matures for 19 months in American oak and blends Tempranillo with Mazuelo and Garnacha.
