Get to know Diego & Adrian Mathier

The Mathier family has been documented in Salgesch since 1387. In 1975, Adrian Mathier and his wife Rosmarie built the winery on Bahnhofstrasse; his son Diego took over in 2001 together with Nadia Mathier. Since then, the house has carried the addition «Nouveau Salquenen». Around 45 hectares of the finest sites from Turtmann to Chamoson belong to the family.

In 1929 the family began making their own wine

After the stock market crash, the collection point in Sierre refused to accept grapes. The family therefore began vinifying their own harvest. In 1951, grandfather Oskar Mathier pressed his first 12,000 litres. In 1975, Adrian and Rosmarie Mathier established today's estate, and in 1986 they won a world championship title with the Œil-de-Perdrix La Matze.

Three times first place in Switzerland

At the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse, the estate was named Switzerland's best wine estate of the year in 2007, 2011 and 2018. In 2016, the special award for best estate of the decade was added, given for the years 2007 to 2016. Diego Mathier is thus the first Swiss wine producer with multiple titles. Over 1,000 awards have been recorded in total.

Salgesch, the Pinot Noir Mecca

In Salgesch, 85 per cent of the vineyard area is planted with red wine, of which 70 per cent is Pinot Noir. The chalky soils originate from one of the largest rockslides in the Alps, which occurred around 13,000 years ago. The vineyard «Les Pyramides» is considered one of the best in the Valais. In the vineyard La Folie near Sion stand Pinot Noir vines over 100 years old. Cédric Leyat has been chief oenologist for many years.
