Handmade in Berneck: Rheintal winemaking tradition in its fifth generation.
Get to know tobias wein.gut.
The tobias wein.gut. has been run by the Schmid family for five generations. Tobias Schmid founded the family business in 1866. Today it is led by Christoph Schmid. Rooted in the St Gallen Rheintal, a region with centuries of winemaking tradition, handmade wines with character are produced on sunny steep slopes.
Winegrowing since Roman times
Winemaking in the St Gallen Rheintal dates back far into Roman times. The vineyards are already mentioned in the oldest Berneck document from 892. Castles and manors were built into the vineyards, including the Schlössli am Rosenberg, which remains in family ownership and is the estate's landmark.
Handmade in Berneck
In Berneck, in the heart of the St Gallen Rhine Valley, the grapes grow on sunny, steep vineyards. «Handmade in Berneck» is meant literally: on the steep slopes, much of the work is carried out by hand, and pressing is done as gently as possible, with a great deal of manual work and a delicate touch.
Tradition meets innovation
In preserving tradition, new insights are continually incorporated into practical work. When renewing the steep vineyards, small terraces are built wherever possible, an ecological improvement that also allows for more efficient cultivation and raises grape quality.
