Fio Wines
Van der Niepoort & Kettern revive the old Moselle style: Riesling under 12% alcohol.
Get to know Fio Wines
When van der Niepoort descends into the cellar with Kettern: Dirk van der Niepoort, one of Portugal's most distinguished winemaking personalities, casts his gaze far to the north, to the Moselle. Together with the young Piesport winemaker Philipp Kettern and his son Daniel van der Niepoort, he founded the Fio estate there. «Fio» means «thread» in Portuguese.
A top-calibre trio
Niepoort, internationally known for wines such as the «Fabelhaft», has for years cultivated a close friendship with the considerably younger Philipp Kettern, a nonconformist. Initially, the trio crafted wines from grapes grown on the vineyards of the Lothar Kettern estate; for some time now, Daniel van der Niepoort has lived and worked at the Kettern family's estate on the Mosel.
The old Mosel style, revived
In 2016, the first four Fio wines were presented: three Rieslings and the cuvée «Rätzelhaft». The stylistic aim is clear: to revive the old Mosel style, as it was practised in the 1920s. Top quality with at least two years of lees ageing, without sulphur additions during maturation, 18 months in wood. Light, with under 12 per cent alcohol.
