Get to know Garage Wine Co.

The Chilean estate in Caliboro (Maule region), around 300 kilometres south of Santiago, was founded in 2001 by winemaker Pilar Miranda Avendaño, her wine-mad husband Derek Mossmann and long-standing friend Alvaro Peña, indeed in a garage. Through the acquisition of further parcels, the small project grew into a proper estate with around 35 hectares of vineyard.

A pure single-vineyard project

The 35 hectares are spread across 16 different vineyards, which means 16 different wines, as Garage Wine Co. is a pure single-vineyard project. The grapes from each vineyard are vinified and bottled separately; provenance and terroir character come first.

Manual work, in part with horses

The vines are cultivated according to organic principles and without irrigation. Work is done by hand wherever possible; some steep, poorly accessible parcels are even worked with horses. This has a long tradition in the region and protects the soil. The cool nights and the influences of the Pacific and the Andes create a perfect climate for viticulture.

Top marks from Parker

In the cellar, intervention is kept to a minimum: the musts ferment with their own yeasts and mature in clay amphorae and used barriques. The result is pristine terroir wines with character, freshness and moderate alcohol levels. Since the 2014 vintage, they have been honoured year after year with top scores by Luis Gutiérrez (Robert Parker Wine Advocate), now rated higher than Seña, Almaviva and Chadwick. This makes them the highest-rated wines in Chile.
