Taboadella
Roman roots, a timber building from 2020, and only native varieties.
Get to know Taboadella
On the Taboadella estate in the Dão, a Roman villa stood in the first century, and the pressing stone carved into a granite boulder is among the oldest evidence of winemaking in the region. The place is documented since 1255. Since 2018 the estate has belonged to the Amorim family, who have been in the cork business since 1870; it is run by Luísa Amorim in the fourth generation.
Around 40 hectares in one piece
The vineyards lie contiguously between 400 and 530 metres on weathered granite soils, farmed without irrigation and hand-harvested, parcel by parcel. After the purchase, the family removed all international varieties: only native ones grow here now, above all Touriga Nacional for the reds and Encruzado for the whites.
A winery of timber and cork
In 2020, the new building by architect Carlos Castanheira opened, built from timber and cork, with gravity-flow pressing and a walkable walkway above the barrel cellar. The guesthouse next door bears the year of the first mention in its name: Casa Villae 1255.
The sister estate in the Douro
Taboadella is the Dão estate of the Amorim wine family, sister to Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo in the Douro, which the family acquired in 1999. The debut vintage 2018 immediately earned ratings of up to 95 points in the trade press.
